| Overview: | On this project Watson Steel Ltd were the main contractor for the supply and installation of a two-lane bow string road bridge over the M42 at junction 4. The bridge services the new Blythe Valley Business Park from the A3400. The 80 metre long bridge spans six motorway lanes plus on and off slip roads. The structural steelwork content is 500 tonnes which was transported to the assembly area to the east of the motorway from the Bolton works. The structure comprises two longitudinal plate girders tied together with tapering cross girders of plate construction. The arches are fabricated steel box girders. The pre-fabrication sections of up to 5 metres wide by 20 metres long were site assembled on two sideway beams into a fully welded construction. The concrete works and pedestrian parapets were also added to the bridge in the assembly area giving a total bridge weight of 1400 tonnes at the time of launch. During a 12 hour overnight possession of the motorway, a modular transporter was positioned under the bridge at one end and 500 tonne capacity skid under the other. The bridge was then launched across the motorway and founded on its abutments at each end. |
